What is SDI?
The Silt Density Index (SDI) test is a means of quantifying the amount of particulate contamination in a water
source. The test was specifically developed as means of predicting the rate of colloidal and particulate fouling
of Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes.
Description of the silt density index test
The silt density index test is performed using a .45 micron, 47mm diameter filter. The water to be tested is
supplied to the filter at a constant pressure of 30 psi. The test involves measuring the time it takes to collect a
500 ml sample through the filter at the start of the test and comparing it with the time it takes to collect a
500ml sample after water has flowed through the filter (at 30psi) for 15 minutes. The sample times are applied
to the formula below to obtain the SDI15 value.

1. Open kit and check that all items are present:
 Pump
 Pressure Gauge
 Pressure Regulator
 Power supply (appropriate for the voltage that was
ordered)
 6 mmTubing (approx. 3 feet)
 Ensure that the power supply is connected to the

2. Use the 6 mm tube to connect the feed water supply to the “IN” port of the pump kit

3. Connect the tubing that comes with the SDI-5000 unit
from the pump “OUT” Port to the “IN” port on the SDI- 5000
unit. Connect the filter holder (without a filter) to the “OUT”
port on the SDI test kit, and position the filter holder over a
drain.
4. To start the pump, plug the pump power supply into a
power source
5. 1. Turn the pump regulator to adjust the pressure to
40-60 psi.
Unplug the pump, and follow the instructions to set up the
SDI-5000.
6. Plug the pump power supply in to begin the test. Follow
the instructions with the test kit to complete the test.
7. When finished, unplug the pump and drain the unit.
